The Birds and the Bees (and the Bears)

Japan_South_Korea_World_Baseball_Classic.sff.embedded.prod_affiliate.138.jpgOnce again, all is right with the world. Well, at least half a world away it is. Japan proved again last night that the only way to win consistently is the small-ball way. And they have some pretty good credentials to back it up now. Two for two in the World Baseball Classic? Yep, I’d say that tells us all we need to know.

But to go back a little, the game between the US and Japanese teams the other night felt kind of familiar. A scrappy team with only a couple household names beats the longball launching representatives of the American heartland. Is this 2006 all over again? And with Adam Dunn manning first base as if he took fielding instructions from tape of the Tigers’ 2006 World Series pitchers, it hit a little too close to home. Why is it that the teams I support field like Nadya Suleyman’s doctor?

The thing is, this should be a happy time. Baseball is back and after a couple week hiatus the regular season officially begins. We no longer have to worry about a potentially disturbing summer at the Jersey Shore and even my beloved and much maligned home state is slowly coming to grips with reality. As if that wasn’t enough, dreams come true next year when for only $194k, you can have your own flying car!

But it just doesn’t feel quite right when the country that invented baseball can’t win at baseball. It’s a good thing there are pole-dancing bears out there or I’d have no reason to ever get out of bed again.

Quit whining, Allen. At least somebody thinks the Tigers will win the Central. http://freep.com/article/20090301/SPORTS18/903010447
And given the state of the division, I’m not inclined to disagree.

Thanks, Mike! As for Allen… I think it’s apparent that he is fond of the bear… for more reason than one (*wink, wink).

I like the warning at the end of the bear video. “never approach wildlife.” haha

Allen- We’re all so lucky that there are pole dancing bears out there.

I’m starting to think the AL Central will be a real dog fight (to keep the animal analogy going). Melissa’s Indians and Erin’s Twins and Allen’s Tigers will rumble. Jen’s White Sox too. Oh, wait. Is there a Royals blogger in the house? Can’t forget them.

Hahaha. Royals blogger… yeah right. They can’t even get 10,000 for the coveted I-70 series to show up. More than half the crowd seems to always be decked out in Cardinal red.
–Jeff

Seriously the I-70 series is in KC is basically a home game for the Cards. It is ridiculous. I went to a Royals/Indians game last year and there were literally more Cards fans there than Royals fans. The Cardinals weren’t even playing.
I would not be surprised if there is a five game difference between first and last in the AL Central.

Allen,
I think in a sense, that this Classic shows the World how much America has done for it. Baseball started out as America’s sport, and it gave it to other countries. It may not have been able to give all of these countries democracy, but baseball is inherently a democratic sport.
Nonetheless, small ball is very important. And maybe if the US had some… pitching? we could have won? Just maybe. 54 runs in seven games?

A Royals blogger??? there used to be one of those up here in NY but he was shot I think.
As for you Detroit fans it appears that the Tigers may have an opening day delemia. Check this out

It’s true, god hates the Tigers. And he showed it by sending his only begotten son to die on their opening day. Well, 2000 years ago, give or take. Still, where is the love?
