Saying “No” to the Nineties
Do you remember what you were doing in the 90’s? Specific moments stick out, like the first time I saw the internet, an incident that also went down as the first time the internet ruined the outcome of a sporting event (’96 Olympics). Specific music, like Pearl Jam, Guns n’ Roses and Nirvana, provided the soundtrack. Tragic events also play a role, like when I realized that my tight-rolled jeans were no longer socially acceptable.
Honestly, I have no desire to relive most of these events. If I want to listen to a little GnR, I download them on iTunes. Tight-rolling has gone the way of beanie babies and grunge. And although the internet still manages to find ways to spoil things:
…it has also found ways to redeem itself.
This is why I ask the question, why would people choose to relive the 90’s? Because apparently it’s happening even as we speak:
Oregon isn’t all bad and I’m sure that many wonderful people live there. But why choose Portland? Go north and you’ve got Seattle and their Mariners. Go south and you have San Francisco and their world champion Giants. Portland? Trailblazers. Although if you’re still living in the 90’s, I guess that means you also have Clyde Drexler and a shot at the NBA Championship. Hope this doesn’t come as a spoiler guys, but you’re going to lose to both the Pistons and the Bulls. Damn internets!

I remember bits and pieces of the ’90s. I was a tad intoxicated here an there….I was also devastated to find my acid-washed jeans were no longer in style and that no one listened to Poison, Motley Crue, and Skid Row anymore.

Me too. The 90’s were a blur. I had my share of intoxicating moments but it was also the decade that Neil Young became cool again.
BTW you can grab a copy of GnR’s “Chinese Democracy” at Best Buy for 1.99. That’s not cool.

Portland needs a big league team. Definitely.
And I dunno if you’ve noticed, but another trend from the 90s seems to be returning with the long locks of the players (Evan Longoria, Joba Chamberlain) flowing from their hats and cascading past their necks—the growing mullets.
I’d freak if I was the manager, but style is style.
And it’s lame.

Reliving the 90’s? Okay that explains the Angels’ disturbing and growing trend of angsty long hair, scruffy beards and unfortunate soul patches this season – the 90’s are back and they’re pissed. If they keep hitting the ball well though, they can look as much like a grunge band as they want.

The mid-90’s I was wathcing my region lose out on a baseball team because a State Legislature pulled the plug on a clock. Saw a city come together when their team was all but packed to leave (Seattle). Saw MLB outwardly refuse to let us buy a storied franchise (Giants) and put the brakes on another in the same region who we actively wanted (Athletics).
Saw man man who made his millions in garbage treat Tampa Bay like trash and steal their expansion team and then laugh all the way to the bank. Finally, 14 years ago today (March 31, 1998), against the Detroit Tigers I got to see our own team take the field…The 90’s might not have been “baseball kind” to me in the beginning, but by the end it was just glorious.
