Keep It On the Field

A year ago the southern edge of the Mediterranean lit up with a rainbow of revolutions.  Tunisia, Libya and Egypt all rose up while even quiet countries like Morocco had to deal with protesters in the streets.  A year later, with real elections taking place across the region, it seemed like things might have finally settled down.  But after what happened in Egypt on Wednesday, maybe not so much.

Violence is a part of sports.  Even baseball, which tends more toward craft than collision, has its share of physical play.  I’m sure no one has quite forgotten the sickening crunch when Buster Posey went down last season.  Despite the uproar after the play, though, few people would deny that it was fair.  Unfortunate, yes, but fair.

The problem is that violence should stay on the field.  Athletes understand the inherent risks in what they do.  They’re also well compensated for it.  But ending up in a coma in the hospital after a game because you were wearing the wrong jersey?  That’s not a part of the game.  Ending up in a morgue in Cairo because you support the wrong team?  That’s not a part of the game.  What’s worse is that it looks like politics may have played a major part in the Cairo catastrophe and that should definitely not be a part of the game.

Setting the Mahmud

RSBS Special Correspondent and Podcast Dissimulator, Mr. Johanna Mahmud reports:

And the Final Rose Goes to…

“Nice guys don’t finish last.  Nice guys just have to wait a little bit longer sometimes.”
–Jake Pavelka

In this all-Bachelor edition here at Setting the Mahmud, I’ve narrowed down who gets my lucky rose!  No, not the MVP award — THAT’S NOT HOW WE DO THINGS AROUND HERE — we’re talking about my rose.

Justin Verlander will win many awards this season, so he doesn’t need this.  He is a feisty one though!

Stephen Strasburg wasn’t around enough this year, but he definitely gets an honorable mention, just because.  Simmering optimism for next year, my friend.  Also, no one should ever have to see what my face is doing right now.

Aramis Ramirez is usually my go-to old flame. That being said, I have an irrational dislike for how he runs the bases.  (Sorry, Aramis. I never had the heart to tell you.)  And now I’m looking for something a little more long term.  I want to build a new life with someone special.  I really can’t do a long distance relationship right now, and I’m not too confident Ramirez will be around much longer.

Buster Posey lost out early.  It was no fault of his own (injury).  BASTARD.  I was rooting hard for him.  He looked strong to start the season and was a returning champ from last year.  Can’t hide the gimpy now though.  There’s always next year!

Another early favorite, Carl Crawford, couldn’t quite get on track in time to qualify.

Asdrubal Cabrera, the human highlight reel, would be a strong contender but this rose can go to only one…

Nyjer Efffin Morgan! MY GUY!!  AKA, Tony Plush!  Nobody does it better.  What can I say?

Nyjer, my dear Nyjer, every moment you had on camera set my heart a flutter. THAT IS NOT WEIRD, PEOPLE.  In fact, T-Sizzle could do odd things to me if he wanted.

I’m only mostly kidding.

Too strong.  TOO GOOD.

How many times have I watched the post-game interview where he channels his inner Bryant Gumbel!?!?  I stopped counting at 1,636. Well, this rose is for you, kid.

Jeff and Johanna join forces in what is secretly designed as an intervention for Allen and his anachronistic memory.  The three of them then launch into some raunchy debates over this young MLB season, including but not limited to double headers, home plate collisions, “offensive” t-shirts and much, much more… all to make you smile for berry berry long time!

Someone Please Save Buster Olney from Himself

My general distaste for all-things Buster Olney is about as well known as LeBron James is tirelessly pompous.

THAT’S A WHOLE LOT!!!

So after Buster Posey’s devastating injury suffered during a home plate collision with Florida Marlin Scott Cousins Thursday night, I shouldn’t have been so surprised that Olney would come out with some stupidly fandangled approach to squash any potential collision-based injuries.

Ban home plate collisions?  What are you talking about, Buster?  It was a freak accident.  Ban home plate collisions!?!

Why don’t we ban pitching inside too!?!

And we should ban breaking up the double play on a hard slide into second!?!

How about we ban walk-off celebrations and ban beer in the grandstands, JUST FOR FUN!?!

EFF THE WORLD!  YOU’RE ON A ROLL, BUSTER!

No one likes to see people get hurt.  No one.  But guess what: it happens.  People get hurt playing baseball all the time.  Sometimes they get seriously hurt.  It sucks.  There’s no denying it.

But that still doesn’t make it okay to go off and make drastic rule changes to the game, just because you and your worldwide leader in smut want blog traffic.

Hate me ‘cuz it ain’t sugarcoated, just don’t hate me ‘cuz I’m right.

Peace,

Jeff

PS.  Things might be different had you not “broken” that story on Ryan Howard for Pujols a while back.  You lost all respect from me — and many other knowledgeable baseball folk, I imagine — after that.

Jeff, Allen and Johanna vehemently compare and critique Croc-based lifestyles, which (surprisingly) include but are not limited to the many labels of Josh Hamilton (including those who are scantily clad), Derek Jeter’s inner Pete Rose, Jeff’s go-to-Gehrig impression, Ozzie Guillen’s mess-mouth and much, much more… all so you can at least laugh while you waste some valuable time!!! Go ahead, laugh it up, fuzzball!

The Greatest Series No One Will See

tim_lincecum_video_game_graphic-93379.JPG

Tim Lincecum.  Cliff Lee.  Buster Posey.  Josh Hamilton (with special guest, Jesus of Nazareth).

This… spells… EPIC.

Unfortunately, only the folks in San Francisco, Dallas/Ft. Worth and the diehards (like myself) will be paying attention.

Such is a World Series without marquee cities and pinstripes galore (see 2006 for more info).

But I have an idea… a way to rope in the casual fan from Syracuse to Sandusky to Sacramento and beyond.

In between innings, give a hot chick a gun and let ‘er rip:

‘Cuz, THAT, dear readers, is ‘Merica!!!

Yes.  Yes, you can thank me later.

Just don’t hate me ‘cuz I’m right.

Peace,

Jeff
