Let’s Get Real

There are only two serious contenders for the Republican presidential nomination.  Ok, let me rephrase.  There are only two contenders for the Republican presidential nomination who should be taken seriously.  And yet somehow, the polls see the Republicans bouncing from one disaster to the next.  Is Mormonism really so bad that you’d prefer Herman Cain?

Because let’s face it, there are only two guys who could win a general election.  Obama may be down for the moment but he’s got a year and he also has a formidable machine.  Without actual ideas, the challengers aren’t going to get very far.

Let me try to explain this in other terms.  Obama is the St. Louis Cardinals in August.  In August, even Jeff knew the Cardinals were toast and should start looking at their chances for the next season.  Two months later, they head home as World Series champions.  That’s Obama.

If you want to beat that, you better have a realistic alternative.  And just for the record, “9-9-9″ is not a realistic alternative nor is a twice-divorced has-been looking for a comeback.  Realistic is having run the U.S. Embassy in China.  Realistic is making universal health care palatable to both sides of the aisle.  Realistic is Huntsman or Romney and unless the Republicans realize that soon, realistic is also an Obama win in 2012.

The RSBS crew celebrates its 30th episode by taking a stroll down podcast memory lane, remembering things that busted our (and hopefully your) guts.  AIDS salad and Ron Santo’s memory get rehashed while new memories (like gay ponies v. horsicorns, an iguana named Dudley and how you can cure your foot problems) are created!  Jump on board the RSBS crazy train!  No stops til you question how you spend your free time!

Don’t forget to getcho Crown Royal and enjoy some happy time!

The RSBS Podcast, Episode 29: Remembering Ugueth’s Urbina and Other Stuff

Click ME to Listen!!!

And so in this Podcast brought to you by Lifestyles

Jeff tries his darnedest to be as polite as possible during his unfettered gloating of World Championship status (Go Cards!) while Second City’s Mark Piebenga adds some level-headed awesomeness to Johanna’s outlandishness and Allen’s seasoned straight man routine.  Among the topics of discussion are “the greatest game ever”, the woes of rebranding an already twice championed franchise (talkin’ to you, Marlins), Theo Fever in the Chi, b!tch t!ts and much, much more!

Now grab some Crown Royal and enjoy yo’ self!

Squashed

As Game 6 of the Series drew to what appeared to be its close, I got very excited.  It wasn’t so much that I was cheering against my friend and his team but I had predicted the Rangers would win and I like to be right.  Beyond that, though, there was another thought.  The perfect post accompanied by the perfect video.  See, if the Cardinals had lost, I planned to post a video showing what had happened to Jeff’s hopes and dreams.  Instead, it now appears that this only applies to me:

Squashed indeed.

Muammar and Tony

Muammar Gaddafi died an ignoble death yesterday afternoon at the hands of people he violently repressed for 42 years.  However the storyline in the immediate aftermath was not so much his death but that he had been captured and shown still alive before being reported dead a little while later.  “What brutality,” cried the pundits while wringing their hands.  “He was a horrible, awful man but he deserved to be tried by a jury of his peers before a sentence was passed.”

To this I respond with the words of my good friend Mr. Lung and ask, “What would Tony LaRussa do?”  No, seriously, what would Tony LaRussa do?  If his team is up by five runs in the 7th with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, is he going to be happy if they don’t score?  Of course not.  He’s going to go for the jugular.  When you let up, you give the other team a chance to get back in the game.  You give them hope.  I’m no political scientist but knowing that there were still Gaddafi loyalists in Libya, it seems to me that keeping him alive only gave them something to rally around.  It’s like your pitcher putting two people on and then coming back to get three straight strikeouts.  You start to think there might still be a chance.

So, the Libyan people did what they had to do.  They drove in those runners and then they scored a couple more when they got rid of Gaddafi’s sons and closest advisors.  No lead is insurmountable, especially in baseball which has no time limit.  But if you go up 20-0 on the other team, it’s going to be pretty hard for them to come back.  Libya went up 20-0 over the memory of Gaddafi yesterday.  I’m pretty sure Tony LaRussa would have done the same thing.

High-Fiving Strangers

One reason I absolutely love going to baseball games is because it’s one of the only places where it’s acceptable to high-five strangers.  And last night, at the end of the most incredible baseball game I’ve ever experienced in the flesh, I was doing a lot of that!

My voice is gone and I’m short of words to describe the experience thus far, but my heart rate tells me: we’re just gettin’ started.

Peace,

Jeff

Weekend at Jeffy’s

As you probably know by now, last weekend I finally got to sit down with Jeff and Johanna to record an RSBS Podcast in person.  The recording session took place around noon but the day didn’t end there.  No, it continued for many hours, many drinks and many laughs.  Sadly, though, we apparently did not party hard enough because it pales in comparison to the weekend Robert Young and Mark Rubinson had.

One of these days I’ll find myself back in the Chi and I hope we can take a mulligan on last weekend’s events.  I think that if we really tried, we could even go so hard that we become Angels’ fans:

On second thought….

For the first time EVER in RSBS Podcast history, Jeff, Allen and Johanna all meet IN THE SAME ROOM!  That’s right, no phone lines, no Skype, just a microphone and three unfettered opinions overlapping and slip-slapping without pause.  Among the topics of discussion are the Tigers, the Cardinals (it’s PLAYOFFS, duh!), an Ozzie Guillen-less Chicago, “blowing” it down the stretch, why you should see Catching Hell and much, much more!

Now getchyer beer and getcho happy on!

One Podcast to Unite Them All

Ladies and gentlemen, today is the day.  Spoken in legend, whispered in fear, the day has arrived.  Today, in Chicago, Illinois, the RSBS Podcast braintrust, MC Lung, Sweet Johanna Mahmud, Often Absent Allen and the podmaster that unites them all, Keith Carmack, come together to record the next installment of the RSBS Podcast.  In person.  That’s right, in person.  Allen has journeyed to Chicago to fulfill the prophecy.  Stay tuned this coming week as the abhorrent afterbirth of this unholy union draws its first unsteady breath.  You will never be the same.

-Jeff and Allen
