The United State of Potential
The year is still young and full of potential. This could be the year that the Tigers return to the World Series and finish what they started in 2006. This could be the year when the Lions approach .500. This could even be the year when the University of Michigan finally ends its travesty of an experiment with Rich Rodriguez and hires someone who actually knows how to coach.
But before we sail off into the sea of “what might be,” I want to take one more look at “what was” in the best way I know how. Through the immortal words of Usher, Enrique and Ke$ha:

Taking it on the Chin
As a Detroit sports fan, I have a better than average reason to detest the people who officiate our matches. The Lions, woebegone team that they may be, have lost to the Chicago Bears twice this season, both times due in part to questionable calls. Tigers’ fans will never forget the perfect game that should have been nor the umpire, Jim Joyce, who made the fateful call.
For other teams, the solution is to strike back and do something. White Sox fans like to charge the field and pummel the ump. Phillies fans….ok, well, Phillies fans don’t really count since they like to beat up little girls. Or at least vomit on them.
Detroit fans, though? We just continue to take it on the chin from the refs. How about we go to the video for a graphical representation:

Hallelujah!
I love snow. I love Christmas. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I’m from Michigan. December isn’t just the most wonderful time of the year, it’s also the time of the year when the Lions finish up and we can pretend that the next season will be better.
Sure, there’s also plenty of baseball news and as a Tigers’ fan I can’t help but be happy because of the Victor Martinez news. But, since there are only a couple of weeks until Christmas, I think I’ll just focus on that. And here’s my opening salvo for the season:

Keepin’ It Real with Mr. Krause
It’s Friday!
And for most of us, Friday = Fun day!
But then there are some of us, like my loquacious and oft-curt colleague, Mr. Allen Krause, for whom Friday = yesterday was a bad day. Again.
Let me explain:
Hate me ‘cuz I don’t know pain like a Lions fan knows pain, just don’t hate me ‘cuz I’m right.

Half of an RSBS Thanksgiving
Since it’s Thanksgiving, I’m not going to be here very long today. But I want to take a couple minutes and add on to what Mr. Lung had to say yesterday.
Without a doubt we are very thankful to have readers who come visit us day after day. Without you, there wouldn’t be much point to what we do.
And despite the fact that this will inevitably be taken as a weakness and exploited by my friend and co-blogger in the very near future, I’m very thankful to have a buddy like Mr. Lung in my corner.
But as we work our way painfully through another NFL season and watch the Lions add to their incredible record of futility, I’m thankful for the Tigers and their ability to at least give us Michiganders a little hope. Victor Martinez may not be Pudge but maybe he’s the missing piece the Tigers have been lacking the past couple seasons. Point is, he’s hope. And hope is something in short supply these days, both in Michigan and the US.
So, enjoy your turkey and be careful as you navigate family that comes around once a year. Despite the potential landmines, it really is the start of the most wonderful time of the year.

Detroit Still Has Some Fight….Just Not the Tigers
Since the Tigers have absolutely no fight left in them, Detroit sports fans have to look elsewhere. And, in general, there hasn’t been much to look for. However, even though preseason doesn’t mean much as far as the record goes, it can show you if a team has fight or not. The good news is that if this video is accurate, the Lions just might have a little more fight in them than we’re used to as Detroit fans:
Ok, so it wouldn’t take much to show more fight than the victory a year the Lions have averaged over the past couple seasons. And, in general, I guess it would be nice if the fight didn’t lead to penalties and suspensions. But when you’re a Detroit fan, you take what you can get.

To All the Detroit Sports Fans
When you’re a Tigers fan, you often wonder who fell asleep at the controls. In fact, being a Tigers fan (or a Lions fan, for that matter) feels a lot like this:
Yeah, it’s funny when you’re watching but it ain’t so funny when you’re living it. At least we’ll always have next year.

One More Goat for the Midwest
In the pantheon of sporting goats, none has a more hallowed place than the guy who brings the season to an end. Sometimes it’s a team effort (the 2009 Detroit Tigers along with the 2007 and 2008 Mets come to mind) but sometimes a single man takes that entire burden onto his shoulders and says, “Yes, I can and will end this season for myself, my teammates and the fans.” Brett Favre is just such a man.
Being a fan of a team in the NFC North, Favre has been a thorn in my side for years now. I was more than happy to see him leave the Packers and I wished him nothing but ill when he made his return to the barren wasteland of the North. However, it warmed my soul to see him end this season the same way he ended the last couple: throwing an interception. He is the career leader after all. It’s only fitting.
I guess the only important question left now is not will he come back….again, but rather, would you call him the Bill Buckner or the Brad Lidge of NFL football? Me, I’m going with Lidge.
